How to become a Faith Community Nurse

To find out more about the FCN role take our free short online course ‘Introducing Faith Community Nursing’. Please click on course photo below to find out more.

After you have taken the free ‘Introduction to Faith Community Nursing’ course ask God for his direction to enable you to put your Christian faith into action using your nursing knowledge and skills to benefit other people via a Faith Community Nurse (FCN) role.

To practice as an FCN in Australia you must hold current and condition free registration as a nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) www.ahpra.gov.au. Ideally, you will have more than 3 years clinical experience and a genuine faith in and love for Jesus Christ, which will sustain you and others you work with.

You will need some additional training to prepare for this nursing role and its autonomous nursing practice. AFCNA has developed a professional training course that corresponds to the internationally recognised curricula from the Westberg Institute of the Spiritual Care Association in the USA. Our ‘Principles and Practice of Faith Community Nursing’ course has online modules that can be personally paced over about 3-6 months.

AFCNA’s course material has been adapted to meet Australian health regulations, but it may be used by nurses from other jurisdictions within the Asia-pacific region who are welcome to enrol. Our facilitators are Christian professional registered nurses with extensive qualifications and experience in teaching nursing at higher education levels.  NB. There are other education providers across Australia and internationally who also host similar courses.
